YWCA Hamilton is proud to announce the graduation ceremony of twenty women from the Women In Skilled Trades Program (WIST). The graduation marks the end of a 12 month pre-apprenticeship and full-time trades placement training program for women looking to gain marketable skills for a career in Hamilton’s construction industry.

The program-led by the YWCA Hamilton in partnership with Mohawk College and Habitat for Humanity- assists women in overcoming barriers to employment by providing the opportunity to develop life and employability skills along with gaining educational components.  Program participants completed Level One Pre-Apprenticeship in General Carpentry with Mohawk College while gaining work experience with Habitat for Humanity making them qualified and experienced to successfully obtain employment and apprenticeships within the construction trades.

“We all came to this program with a common goal and the drive to achieve,” exclaimed one proud graduate, “I now have hope. I now have skills. Most importantly, I now have opportunities and options.”

Participants attended workshops on employability skills and were provided experience in the construction trades with Habitat for Humanity with their build of 2 – 4 Unit townhouse complexes in Hamilton’s North end.

The graduation took place on Monday June 27th at 2:00 pm in YWCA Hamilton’s Main office at 75 MacNab Street South. The YWCA Hamilton thanks the generous support from the Government of Ontario for this program.
