Some good news for women in Uganda last week–President Yoweri Museveni launched a campaign to end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) . Museveni, is quoted by the Guardiansaying that FGM is dangerous for women and that it is unacceptable to condone the practice of FGM as “cultural”. The Guardian also quotes Museveni as stating the he will pledge “to help provide an alternative source of income for women who earn a living circumcising girls.”
salon.com notes that while enacting a law against the practice of FGM is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, a gap often exists between enacting a law and enforcing a law. Lynn Haris says it best, ” A ban is a necessary start, to be sure, but when it comes to FGM, it takes a village to save a child”.
